Since the formation of the group in 2001, Del 9 have led the underground animation scene in Dublin, and have been important figures in the rise of the international “bedroom animator” scene. Their DIY aesthetic in music videos for local musicians such as The Jimmy Cake and The Frames attracted internationally known music makers such as Max Tundra, Luke Vibert and Caribou. Their work has been commercially released on the label Warp Records alongside the work of Chris Cunningham, and a recent DVD of all their video work for Caribou has been released on Leaf Records in Europe and Domino in the U.S., sharing the roster with band such as The Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.
For 5 years, Del 9 have remained strictly independent, moving their studio from bedrooms to spare rooms. For 2 years they lived and worked in the same house in Marino. In 2004 they moved their into a studio space on Liffey Street. Unbelievably, they still live together. To celebrate the creative huddle, the Caribou DVD release was named after the Dublin 3 locale of its creation ‘Marino – The Videos’.Not happy with sticking to animation, Del 9 have consistently experimented with other mediums, combining live action and animation, making children’s television for The Den, performing live visuals at massive warehouse gigs, curating and organising digital film festivals, holding workshops for kids, creating interactive installations, designing and printing t-shirts, producing video work for kids theatre (The Day I Swapped my Dad for 2 Goldfish) and more avant-garde works (Daniel Figgis’ Tamper).
Del 9 are currently working with Darklight Film Festival director and artist Nicola Gogan on new films, and are determined to make more short and feature film work as well as continuing their work in other mediums.website: http://www.delicious9.com | myspace.com/delicious9
